Lenovo brand Moto on Sunday at MWC 2017 launched the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus smartphone. While the Moto G5 runs on a Snapdragon 430 SoC, the Moto G5 Plus runs on a Snapdragon 625 SoC. We decided to take compare the Moto G5 Plus with another popular phone running the same SoC – the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.

While the basis of the comparison of the Moto G5 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is the common denominator of the Snapdragon 625 SoC, there are several differences between the two smartphones, as will be clear as we proceed with the comparison.

However, let us begin with the commonalities. Both the Moto G5 Plus and Redmi Note 4 sport full-HD displays, however, of different sizes. Both smartphones come in dual-SIM variants, both support storage expandability via microSD card (up to 128GB). Both smartphones feature 2GB RAM/ 32GB inbuilt storage variants as their base models, as well as 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage and 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variants. Both feature expandable storage support via microSD card (up to 128GB).

As for the differences, the Moto G5 Plus runs Android 7.0 Nougat, compared to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based MIUI 8 that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 runs. It sports a smaller display at 5.2 inches, compared to the Redmi phone’s 5.5-inch display.

The Moto G5 Plus comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera with dual autofocus, 4K video recording, an f/1.7 aperture, and dual-LED flash, while the Redmi Note 4 comes with a 13-megapixel camera with PDAF, full-HD video recording, an f/2.0 aperture, and dual-LED flash. They both have 5-megapixel front cameras.

One of the biggest differences is in the battery segment. The Moto G5 Plus has a much smaller 3000mAh battery, while the Redmi Note 4 has a 4100mAh battery. This probably contributes significantly to the weight as well, with the G5 Plus weighing in at 155 grams, and the Redmi Note 4 at 175 grams. The G5 Plus is 9.7mm-thick, while the Redmi Note 4 is 8.3mm thick.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is available in three variants in India - the 2GB RAM/ 32GB inbuilt storage model is priced at Rs. 9,999, the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage model is priced at Rs. 10,999, and 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage model is priced at Rs. 12,999.

As for the Moto G5 Plus, we only know prices – that too European and US pricing – for two variants. The 2GB RAM/ 32GB storage model is priced at $229 (roughly Rs. 15,300), while the 3GB RAM/ 32GB variant is priced at EUR 279 (roughly Rs. 19,700). The price of the 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant is not known.
