Samsung Galaxy S II to get Android 4.1 update in February

The much-awaited Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S II (Review) is on its way. The device is expected to receive the update next month, reports CNET.

The company's official Korean website had recently posted details of the update, which is likely to reduce internal memory from 12GB to 11GB. The reduced 1GB memory is to be used for system partition, also a part of the update. Furthermore, this upgrade will only be available through Samsung's proprietary KIES software and not over-the-air.

The update will reach users of Singapore first, with other regions to follow soon. Also the update will be rolled-out not just to the i9100, but also to the other versions of the S II, including the ones available in the US, like the i777 (for AT&T) and the T989 (for T-Mobile).

Here's a look at what users will get s part of the Jelly Bean upgrade:

1. Platform upgrade Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • Improved Home screens and improved scrolling performance (thanks to project Butter)
  • Improved usability for some applications

2. Preloaded applications
Add Help, Google+, +Talk, Play Book, Play Movie

3. Newly added/improved functions
  • Add Easy mode, Block mode
  • Improved Camera functions: function like Pause while recording and more
  • Add Smart Stay
  • New functions like Pop-up play and more
  • Improved some functions & applications usability
Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S II Plus running on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with Nature UX atop. Other features include a 4.3-inch WVGA(480x800) Super AMOLED Plus display an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and capable of full-HD video recording. There's a 2-megapixel front camera as well.

On the inside,the smartphone is powered by a dual-core Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, a Broadcomm GPU and has 1GB RAM. The internal storage has been skimmed down to 8GB but microSD support upto 64GB will be available.
