After a sighting at a deal site, Sony has officially launched Xperia ion in the country today. Featuring Android 4.0, the smartphone has been priced at Rs. 36,999 and is now available at major retail stores.

Sony Xperia ion was originally announced at CES this year, but was US exclusive at that time. Company has since decided to release it in other markets such as India as well. It sports 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.6-inch 720p display and a 12.1MP rear camera.

The smartphone also features NFC, 1GB RAM, front camera and 1900 mAh battery. The device replaces Xperia S as the flagship smartphone in the country. Sony Xperia S currently retails at a street price of Rs. 27,000.

Sony has partnered with Airtel to provide exclusive data offer for ion buyers; Airtel mobile customers will get 500MB of free 3G data per month for 3 months as well as 200 minutes of Mobile TV for a period of 2 months with every Xperia Ion purchase.

"With Xperia ion, we're bringing together a seamless experience across the multiple screens that we use to play, watch, listen, and share. Xperia ion is the gateway to HD entertainment when and - most importantly - where you want it. We are glad to see overwhelming customer response for our Xperia range and we thank them for supporting us unconditionally on this successful journey in India," said Prasun Kumar, Marketing Head, Sony Mobile Communications.
