Sony on Monday announced the rollout of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update had begun for its Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact smartphones.

The company says that the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA update for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact smartphones has started to roll out and will first hit Nordic and Baltic regions. The rollout will continue to further markets and more Xperia Z series devices in around two weeks' time.

Sony has provided a changelog for the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact. It essentially features Google's Material Design interface (Lollipop design style notifications, and lock screen with fully customisable settings), but retains the company's approach to minimalistic interface and application design. Sony has also included the Android Lollipop's multi-user profiles and guest mode features.

The Japanese firm also claims it has improved storage control and customisation options to easily move applications from internal memory to SD card. Other than that, the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact has got support for Android for Work, notes Sony.

While Sony has not detailed the exact Android version number of the update, Xperia Blog reports that the firm is rolling out Android 5.0.2 Lollipop rather than Android 5.0.

Earlier this month, Sony surprised everyone by saying that it would only be bringing the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to its Xperia Z series of devices. Replying to a Sony Xperia M2 user about the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, Sony apologised for not updating devices other than those in the Xperia Z series.

We are expect however that the company will gradually update few of its other devices as well. While the company officially didn't suggest any devices, it noted in a tweet that, "we can't comment on upgrades for further products at this time - please stay tuned to our blog for the latest information."
