Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg is reportedly making the jump to Marvel Television, with an hour-long drama series about female superheroes set at ABC, the Disney-owned US network that is also the home of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There are no further details at this point except that the show will centre on “lesser-known” Marvel characters.

Deadline first brought word of the new development, claiming that launching a new Marvel series has been a priority for ABC. Variety has since confirmed the development. Heinberg has an overall deal with ABC Studios, which is producing the show with Marvel Television. The latter’s head Jeph Loeb will serve as executive producer alongside Heinberg.

The new Marvel series will be the fourth on ABC and the thirteenth overall. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. kicked things off in 2013 at ABC and is set conclude next year with its sixth season, premiering July 2019. The short-lived Agent Carter ran for two seasons, and Inhumans was cancelled after its disastrous first season. It makes sense that ABC would want a new Marvel show given the slate is about to clear.

For Marvel, Heinberg’s series will be the third female-led superhero series, after Agent Carter, and Jessica Jones on Netflix, which is currently filming its third season. The film division, Marvel Studios, is much behind in that respect – its first female-led project, Captain Marvel, arrives March 2019. A Black Widow film is currently in development.

In addition to penning the 2017 hit Wonder Woman, Heinberg has worked as a writer and producer on Sex and the City, The O.C., and Grey’s Anatomy. He co-created The Catch in 2016, which lasted two seasons. He has a strong comic book background, having created Young Avengers and its sequel Avengers: The Children’s Crusade at Marvel Comics, and co-written JLA: Crisis of Conscience and re-launched Wonder Woman at DC Comics.

The show will likely release on Amazon Prime Video in India, given the streaming service signed a long-term deal with Disney India for its TV slate earlier this year.
