Although the last big releases of the year have finally hit the shelves both digital and physical, that has not stopped developers from releasing new content for existing games this late in the year. Well, that's true at least for Microsoft-owned Mojang. The studio has just announced a massive update to the console versions of its sandbox survival game Minecraft.

A vast majority of the update consists of new content in the form of biomes, items, blocks, and mobs. More crucially, a slew of much needed fixes and tweaks have been implemented to make the game a lot more enjoyable. These include a new tutorial world, improved arrow physics, and updated audio for cows, mushrooms, and mine carts. You can view the entire change log on Mojang's website. With a wealth of new content and a host of fixes, it brings a sense of parity between the console and PC versions of the game.

"Yes, we're constantly improving Minecraft on all platforms but this is actually our biggest update ever, bringing the console versions closer to the current PC build than they've ever been before," wrote Owen Hill, Director of Creative Communications at Mojang.

Dubbed Update 1.8.8 it's live for the PS3, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 consoles. Looking for it on the PS Vita and newly launched Wii U version, you might have to wait a bit longer.

"Two quick notes about 1.8.8 on other consoles before we get into it: the update is slightly delayed for Minecraft on Playstation Vita so expect it to arrive in the next few days," Hill's post states. "And, though we're working hard to bring these features to Nintendo's console, 1.8.8 won't be available on Wii U until some time next year."

We fired up our copy of Minecraft on the Xbox One and were greeted with a 362MB update. Safe to say it will be of a similar size on other consoles.
