  • 90 million users are on PlayStation Network according to Sony
  • India has around 400,000 PS4s
  • Spider-Man's sales were over a two month period

Sony has announced that the PS4 and PS4 Pro have sold through over 91.6 million units globally. Between November 19, 2018 and December 31, 2018 more than 5.6 million PS4 and PS4 Pro units were sold. Furthermore, Spider-Man PS4 sold 9 million copies worldwide from September 9, 2018 to November 25, 2018 across both disc and digital downloads. We're no experts, but it seems that Sony has had a very lucrative holiday season with the PS4 family of consoles selling strong despite debuting five years ago. It's possibly proof that while neither console has the best specifications, a strong library of games makes the PS4 or PS4 Pro worth considering for most gamers.

"Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of end of November 2018," said John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

"I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones. This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world."

It will be interesting to see what Kodera and his team perceive as an 'active user' for PlayStation Network. Does the company account for a single consumer having multiple PSN IDs as one or many users? Is simply using any network-related PS4 features like Wi-Fi add to that 90 million user base of PSN? Or does this even account for PS Vita and PS3 users in addition to PS4 users?

As for India, the PS4 has been the number one console in the country since it's launch. The widely accepted install base for the PS4 in India sits in the range of 380,000 to 400,000 units including grey market sales as well as the limited PS4 Pro sold via various channels (official or otherwise) sold till date, which has seen it surpass the PS3 with which only mustered 350,000 units in its lifetime.
