Nokia has announced software updates for its Windows Phone 8 smartphones Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 on its support discussions forum.

Nokia mentions that the new software updates (version 1232.5957.1308.00xx) for Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 will bring improved automatic display brightness adjustment, a fix for intermittent screen blanking during a call, in addition to other performance and stability improvements.

The update (version 1030.6407.1308.00xx) for Lumia 620 will bring improved touch screen functions, including corrections in multi-touch actions, better voice quality with Bluetooth headsets that support echo/ noise suppression, enhanced camera performance with corrected exposure when flash is used in bright light conditions and various other improvements to system stability, performance, and usability.

Nokia says that the update would be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and that the exact software version may wary between different regions. Users will get an update prompt when the software is made available for their device and can update their phones over the air.

Just a day back, a report had indicated that Microsoft will issue an update, reportedly called General Distribution Release (GDR3), later this year that will bring support for 1080p resolution to Windows Phone 8. It is also expected to enable support for quad-core processors, paving the way for Windows Phone 8 devices to compete at par with its Android counterparts, at least as far as pure specifications are concerned.

Prior to that, there was another report according to which Microsoft was also preparing a new Windows Phone 8 update, the General Distribution Release(GDR2) that will bring support for FM radio tuner hardware. It had mentioned that the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, among other handsets will start supporting FM radio, following the update, as the hardware is already present. It had also talked about Nokia's own firmware improvements that would add a new gesture to the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 to allow users to wake the device from standby/ lock mode just by tapping on the screen.

Microsoft is also said to be working on Windows Phone Blue, the successor to Windows Phone 8. It had earlier rolled out the Portico update to Windows Phone 8 devices.
