Qualcomm could announce the successor to its infamous Snapdragon 810 SoC as soon as next week. A new report coming out of China claims that the chipset maker has plans to hold an event on Tuesday in Los Angeles where it is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 820 SoC.

The Snapdragon 820 SoC was first unveiled in March at Mobile World Congress trade show, and said it will feature custom Kryo cores. But at the time, Qualcomm hadn't revealed the full specifications and the supposed capability of the upcoming mobile processor. It is expected to come with a quad-core CPU with Adreno 530 GPU, and MDM9x55 LTE Category 9 modem.

Among the big changes, the company had noted that the new chipset will use its custom designed Kryo cores. For a refresh, in the Snapdragon 810 and even the Snapdragon 808 chipset, the company relied on ARM's big.LITTLE processors instead of its custom designed cores.

The company's current flagship Snapdragon 810 chipset largely failed to deliver the success Qualcomm had expected of it. The chip was widely reported to have overheating issues. It was also not the most powerful mobile processor out there, with reports of Samsung's homegrown Exynos chipset in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge beating the Snapdragon 810 in several benchmarking tests.

The report said that the Snapdragon 820 won't be available to smartphone manufacturers until 2016.
