Highlights
  • God of War for PS4 Pro has two visual options
  • On a non-4K display, supersampling is enabled for a sharper picture
  • The game looks good on a standard PS4 as well

With our God of War review finally live, we can talk about the game's graphic options for the PS4 Pro. Prior to release, God of War director Cory Barlog said that God of War would feature a performance mode for those playing the game on a PS4 Pro without a 4K TV. During our time with the game, Barlog's claims rang true. Playing God of War on a PS4 Pro with a 1080p screen resulted in supersampling being applied by default (complete with a notification explaining so), allowing for sharper, 4K-like visuals. Switching over to a 4K display had the game display in native 4K with no message or indication of supersampling being enabled.

Digging into the game's options, God of War has two choices in its Camera section. Choosing Favour Performance lets you play the game at a higher than 30fps frame rate (it did not go close to 60fps), while going with Favour Resolution had a slew of effects and sharper details albeit at a locked 30fps.

God of War PS4 Pro - Favour Resolution or Favour Performance?

Given the action-oriented nature of the combat, every little bit of extra performance counts in terms of frame rate. With that in mind, we prefer the Favour Performance option. Sure, God of War looks better using the other option but not by much. What's more is that choosing the performance mode doesn't result in screen tearing or judders in our experience, making it the smoothest way to play thus far.

We also tested God of War on a PS4 Slim. The game still looked good too, although it obviously didn't match up to the PS4 Pro with 4K and HDR. That said, no matter what you choose, God of War is great to look at and the action is fast-paced with barely a frame out of place.
