  • Sony has increased the price of PS Plus in US and Canada
  • India already had a price hike last year.
  • We could see more features added to PS Plus soon

Sony has increased the price of PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) in the US and Canada. A yearly subscription will cost you $59.99/ $69.99 CAD while a quarterly subscription will set you back by $24.99/ $29.99 CAD from September 22. The monthly plan of $9.99 remains the same in the US while Canadians will have to pay $11.99 CAD.

PS3 and PS4 owners looking to play online multiplayer games such as Overwatch or Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 require PS Plus subscription in order to do so.This comes a couple of weeks before the company's September 7 event in New York City that's anticipated to see the launch of the PS4 Neo, and perhaps was done to avoid negative publicity close to the big day.

"This marks the first time that PS Plus membership prices will increase in the US and Canada since the launch of the service in 2010. The new pricing reflects the current market conditions while enabling us to continue providing exceptional value to our members. As a member, you will continue to enjoy the benefits and features that enable shared experiences, such as online multiplayer, free games, and exclusive discounts," posted PlayStation Plus Content Partnership Manager Greg Lewickyj. "You will also continue to get exclusive benefits such as online game save storage and discounts across the PlayStation digital services.

If you do not wish to continue your subscription, please be sure to cancel it by turning off auto-renewal in your account settings before September 22, 2016."As for India, a price hike took place last year in line with the rest of Europe. It's unlikely that we'll see a price hike any time soon.

Nonetheless, there's probably more to the price hike than Sony is revealing. Reason being, a few months ago a survey from the company surfaced on popular gaming forum NeoGAF. It hinted at new features for PS Plus.

These include:
  • Discounts on PS hardware and accessories, (controllers, and headsets)
  • Monthly PS+ contests with prizes
  • PS+ knowledge base (Forum for PS+ members)
  • Discounts on Sony products (TVs, cameras, smartphones)
  • Discounts on lifestyle products (newspaper subscriptions, movie tickets, fast food, travel fare)
  • PS+ gaming tournaments with prizes
  • Free movies every month
  • Discounts on popular streaming services (Netflix, HBO Nordic, Spotify)

It is possible that Sony is holding back until its September event before announcing which features made the cut if at all.
