Western Digital (WD) has now launched a new ‘fits-in-your-palm’ SSD that is durable, easy to carry, and comes with USB Type-C support as well. Calling it the WD My Passport SSD, the company has made it available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB variants, and the price of these starts at $100 (roughly Rs. 6,500).

WD, known for its external hard drives, has finally decided to foray into the portable SSD market, to compete better with competitors like Seagate and LaCie. This is the first portable SSD from WD, and to make up for the delay, the WD My Passport SSD offers sequential read speeds of up to 515MBps using the USB Type-C port.

The WD My Passport SSD comes with password protection with built-in 256-bit AES hardware encryption. The company says the portable design takes care of heat management, and the drive is said to be shock-resistant as well. The My Passport SSD works with Mac and PCs, and is compatible with USB Type-C and USB Type-A ports. It is also USB 3.1 Gen 2 ready, and USB 3.0, 2.0 and USB-A compatible. Furthermore, the SSD is tough enough to withstand a drop of up to 6.5 feet (1.98 meters), and it comes with WD Backup software that makes it easy to automatically back up high-capacity files to your drive or Dropbox cloud service account.
