Sony on Wednesday took it to Twitter to announce that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update will be reaching the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 handset series at the start of 2015. The information came as a reply to user queries.

"@SamTomelleri We'll start the upgrade at beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series," replied the verified Sony Xperia handle on the microblogging website. Sony did not announce when its Xperia Z and Xperia Z1 series handsets will receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

Notably, Sony last month released the Android 5.0 Lollipop AOSP device configuration source, pre-built software binaries and build instructions binaries for its range of Xperia Z handsets namely, Sony Xperia Z3, Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, Sony Xperia Z2, Sony Xperia Z1 and Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.

The announcement by the Japanese multinational conglomerate puts the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 range of smartphones in the same time period when the Samsung Galaxy S4 models are also expected to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

Earlier this month, the Galaxy S4 successor, Galaxy S5, reportedly started receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update. The model that is said to have started receiving the Android version upgrade is SM-G900F (Indian octa-core model is SM-G900H), which is a commonly available unlocked variant. The new version number of Android 5.0 Lollipop for Samsung Galaxy S5 is G900FXXU1BNL2 with a Android LRX21P build.

While the Sony Xperia, Samsung Galaxy and other handset series are yet to officially receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, Google earlier this week released the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop factory image for the Nexus 5 smartphone, following a similar release for other Nexus models earlier.
