Highlights
  • Android Marshmallow was on 7.5 percent active devices in May.
  • Android Lollipop has a total share of 35.4 percent of active devices.
  • KitKat continues to drop, now registering at 31.6 percent devices.

Another month has passed and another update to the Google Play distribution data has been made available, revealing the share of various Android versions running on active devices. The data was collected during the seven-day period ending June 6, and it shows that Android 6.0 Marshmallow now runs on 10.1 percent of active devices, a 2.6 percent increase over the May figure of 7.5 percent.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow has been slow to gain adoption, and whether it's due to the low number of new devices being released with the latest OS version, or few OS updates from Android OEMs is hard to say. To put the numbers in perspective, Android 6.0 Marshmallow made it to 1 percent of active devices in February, five months after its release to Nexus devices.

The June Android version distribution data shows that Android Lollipop has a total share of 35.4 percent of active Android devices (with Android 5.0 Lollipop running on 15.4 percent of devices and Android 5.1 Lollipop on 20 percent) that check into Google Play. Last month, Android Lollipop had a total share of 35.6 percent of active Android devices.

Google gathers figures from active devices visiting the Google Play app, which only supports Android 2.2 and above. KitKat continues to drop, now registering at 31.6 percent of active devices, down from 32.5 percent last month. Jelly Bean on the other hand as a total share of 18.9 percent, dropping down from 20.1 percent. Android 4.1.x was seen running on 6.8 percent devices (down from 7.2 percent), while Android 4.2.x was seen on 9.4 percent (down from 10 percent), and Android 4.3 on 2.7 percent devices (down from 2.9 percent).

The latest OpenGL version distribution numbers, on the other hand, saw OpenGL 2.0 dominating at 48.6 percent, dropping from 49.6 percent the previous month, while OpenGL version 3.0 has risen to 41.8 percent from 41.4 percent, and OpenGL 3.1 sits at 9.6 percent.
