Google on Monday updated its Google Play distribution data to show the latest market shares for different versions of Android. It finds that Android 4.4 KitKat is now roughly on one-third of Android devices, and is fast catching up to Jelly Bean.

According to the new Google Play distribution data, Android 4.4 KitKat is now installed on 30.2 percent Android devices that accessed Google Play in the seven-day-period ending on November 3. This figure was 24.5 percent in September and 20.9 percent in August.

While KitKat is gaining fast, it still has a long way to go until it touches Jelly Bean, which after a continuous decline, still managed 50.9 percent (53.8 percent in September) adoption share. In the latest report, Android Ice Cream Sandwich accounted for 8.5 percent adoption share, while Gingerbread still had a 9.8 percent share, after a decrease of 1.6 percent in September.

Google says since the data is gathered from the new Google Play app, which supports Android 2.2 Froyo and above, devices running older versions were not included. Notably, these devices running versions older than Android 2.2 accounted for about 1 percent in August 2013.

Meanwhile, the adoption of Android KitKat has continued to rise over the past several months, as even the smaller players have contributed with more KitKat-based smartphones than Jelly Bean in the meantime.

Of course, now that Google on Monday has announced the start of the Android 5.0 Lollipop roll-out to users worldwide, it remains to be seen if Android KitKat could go even further than what Jelly Bean had achieved at one time, though it seems unlikely.
