The CyanogenMod community on Tuesday announced that it will be shuttering the WhisperPush secure messaging service. The application developed by Open Whisper Systems will be "end-of-lifed" starting February 1.

In a blog post on Tuesday, CyanogenMod said that since this will be a server side change, all versions starting from CM10.2 will be affected. Also added is that the maintenance of the integration saw some hiccups such as longstanding registration issues, which led them to this decision. It is worth mentioning that the latest smartphone to feature WhisperPush is the Yu Yutopia.

WhisperPush messaging application, which debuted a little over two years ago was updated late, in the CM12.1 cycle and was transitioned to CM13 as well by the CyanogenMod community. "However, with the rapid adoption of the official Signal application, our implementation into Messaging would have been a seemingly unnecessary fork," the community added.

CyanogenMod recommends WhisperPush users to unregister their linked device or number before February 1. "Unregistering numbers will ensure that your active clients don't run into the 'iMessage problem' and send messages into the void." If for some reason the users are not able to unregister, the CyanogenMod community will unregister all numbers automatically by themselves. After the due date, messages will stop going through the WhisperPush service and will be sent as regular text messages.

The community encourages users to switch to Signal Private Messenger, another text encryption application from Open Whisper Systems. "It's also cross-platform, with a Desktop beta in flight and iOS support as well," adds the blog post. The Android app is available to download from Google Play.
