The murmurs that Samsung is working on a cheaper variant of the Galaxy Note II are getting too frequent to ignore.

Last week, we saw reports mention an 'affordable' 5-inch Samsung phablet may soon be forthcoming. Now, the blog SamMobile says that a cheaper Galaxy Note II is indeed in the works. According to the blog, this version will not have the famed S-Pen, to make sure the Galaxy Note II retains its premium status.

The new basic Galaxy Note II isn't the name of this device but Samsung is having plans to introduce a Galaxy Note II variant for Europe with lower specs. Samsung wants everyone to try bigger screens. Samsung will remove the SPEN function so what the real Galaxy Note II owner will have is special. We think Samsung will not use sAMOLED in this device.

So are both set of reports mentioning the same device, or is Samsung working on two different 5-inch devices? We'll find out soon enough.

Earlier, reports had mentioned a 5-inch device codenamed Baffin that was believed to be an affordable option in the phablet segment. The device, purportedly carrying the name Samsung Galaxy Grand and model number SHV-E270S/ SHV-E270K, is reported to have already received FCC clearance, indicating it's ready to go on sale. The device resembles Samsung Galaxy S III as far as outwards appearance is concerned.

Samsung Galaxy Grand will reportedly sport a 5-inch LCD display with 800x480 resolution, 1.4Ghz quad-core Exynos 4412 processor, LTE connectivity, NFC and run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean carrying a 2100mAh battery.
