Mobile handset maker Motorola on Wednesday said it is evaluating a manufacturing facility for mobile phones in India.

Besides, the company wants to be the "most dominant" handset brand in the country.

"We are evaluating manufacturing facility in India... it is difficult to say (when it is to be set up) but evaluations are going on," Motorola Mobility India General Manager Amit Boni said in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

The company had an assembly and packaging unit in Chennai but operations were suspended and the unit is now lying idle.

"We have a factory in Chennai and the idea is how to restart it and a lot of analysis is going on," he said.

Currently, the company is importing mobile handsets from China, he added.

Motorola, which has been selling mobile handsets through e-commerce portal Flipkart in an exclusive tie-up, has no plans to enter traditional retail market.

"We are not planning on going into standard trade (practice). Our e-commerce strategy is doing very well and we will keep on doing in near future. Therefore, there is no plan to go into retail outlet or distribution network," he said.

The company had sold 3 million phones through the e-commerce portal between February and December last year, he said, adding that the company had five percent market share last year.

"Our intent is to be the number one and we want to be the most dominant handset brand in India," he said.

Asked about the smartphone market size, he said 110 million smartphones are getting added every year with 80-85 percent in less than Rs. 12,000-13,000 price range.

Currently, Motorola has five models, including Moto E, Moto G, Moto X.
