  • A YouTuber took up the DIY project to create a clear-glass Galaxy S8
  • The project took roughly an hour
  • The warranty was voided and the phone was not water-resistant anymore

Samsung Galaxy S8 is a beautiful smartphone that costs upwards of $720 (Rs. 57,900 in India), so most people would be very careful about how they handle it. Not everyone though. The host of YouTube channel Jerry Rig Everything, seemingly unhappy with the paintjob of his swanky new Galaxy S8, put the smartphone through the paces to give it a “super cool” clear-glass look.

The YouTuber, with close to a million followers on the platform, used easily available tools and chemicals to take off the original Samsung Galaxy S8 paintjob. He said the colouring on the smartphone is in the form of a coating that can be scraped off, but not easily. The glass cover on the back was taken out with the help of heat and a thin prying tool. Getting rid of the paint was the next big task, but scratching off would take a lot of time and effort, so he uses epoxy paint remover, which makes the job much easier. The paint and the lamination underneath were removed using a blade, and a quick rinse gave the back panel the clear glass look Jerry needed.

Next was getting complete access to the glass slab, which required removing the camera unit and fingerprint sensor. Once that was done, he removed the eight non-essential screws to have a better look at the innards of the Galaxy S8. With the screws removed, it was time for the wireless charging plate to go, and half of the loudspeaker plastics were removed.

The camera unit and fingerprint sensor, which were earlier removed, were stuck back securely using double-sided tape. Then the glass panel was cleaned one last time before it is sealed once again using the same double-sided tape. With the back panel in place, we have the clear-glass Samsung Galaxy S8 at hand.

The whole project took about an hour, says the YouTuber in the video, and the $8 (roughly Rs. 600) paint thinner was the only thing he had to buy. The only downside, according to him, is the loss of wireless charging and water-resistance, and of course the warranty. Watch the video below to see the whole process:
