Sony has expanded its Xperia smartphone series and launched the Xperia E1 mid-range smartphone alongside the Xperia T2 Ultra phablet. The Japanese handset maker has launched both the devices in two variants: single SIM and dual-SIM, namely the Sony Xperia E1, Sony Xperia E1 dual, Sony Xperia T2 Ultra and Sony Xperia T2 Ultra dual. We expect that the variants of the Xperia E1 and Xperia T2 Ultra are targeted for different markets; however, Sony has not revealed any pricing and availability details of the devices.

The company notes that the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra phablet has been designed specifically for emerging markets like China, Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific.

The Sony Xperia E1 is the single SIM variant, while the Xperia E1 dual is the dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) variant, and both models otherwise come with identical specifications. Unfortunately, there is no word on Sony Xperia E1 and Xperia E1 dual's Android software versions.

The Sony Xperia E1 features a 4-inch WVGA display with a resolution of 480x800 pixels and a 233ppi pixel density. The smartphone is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8210 processor alongside 512MB of RAM. The Xperia E1 comes with 4GB inbuilt storage, with no word on expandable storage support and also no mention of the camera. The smartphone packs a 1700mAh battery and comes with 3G connectivity support. Sony notes that the Xperia E1 will be available in Black, Purple and White.

The Japanese giant is touting the Xperia E1 as mid-range device and claims that the device can produce up to 100Db music through loudspeakers. Sony also is offering a promotional 30 day free pass for company's Entertainment Network music streaming service.

The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra on the other hand, much like the Xperia E1, comes in two variants, both sporting same innards, except that the Xperia T2 Ultra dual comes with dual-SIM support. The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. It comes with a 6-inch HD TRILUMINOS display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 and offers a resolution of 720x1080 pixels.

The phablet is powered by a quad-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor with 1GB of RAM. It comes with 8GB of inbuilt storage, which can be further expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. The phablet sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with Exmor RS for mobile and also houses a 1.1-megapixel front-facing camera with an Exmor R sensor. The Xperia T2 Ultra packs a 3000mAh battery with battery STAMINA Mode.

Commenting on the launch, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications, Calum MacDougall said, "Xperia T2 Ultra will lead the category through its combination of advanced display and camera technologies, it will bring large-screen entertainment in an amazingly portable form factor and it will do it all whilst providing incredible value for money.

"Xperia E1 combines the best of Sony's audio technologies with a premium design and great hardware to create a smartphone for people who want to express themselves out loud. It's a new, music focused player in our Xperia line-up that is underpinned by the best of Sony's design, display and content offers," MacDougall further added.
