  • Existing users avail faster speeds with no increase in monthly rentals
  • Airtel says a chargeable modem upgrade is required however
  • The service was launched in Chennai, but will be rolled out across India

Airtel on Thursday announced the launch of its V-Fiber 'superfast broadband' service in the country, starting with Chennai. The V-Fiber service - which offers speeds up to 100Mbps - will be rolled out to 87 other cities in India that have Airtel's broadband service in the coming weeks, starting with Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru. Alongside, Airtel announced that unlimited free voice calling that was earlier available on select broadband plans will be extended to all customers.

The company notes the process of upgrading to the V-Fiber network will not require it to dig up roads or re-wire, instead, it will boost the last mile copper connectivity by using 'noise elimination technology' it is referring to as Vectorization. It adds that local exchanges have been upgraded to handle faster fibre speeds. To avail the faster V-Fiber broadband service, existing broadband users will require a new modem.

While the new modem is chargeable (exact pricing details have not been provided), Airtel says monthly rental plans will not increase alongside the increase in speed. These modem charges will be fully refunded if the customer is not satisfied with the service within the first month, the company says. New customers get an 'unlimited three months trial offer'.

Both existing and new users can register or pre-book the V-Fiber service via the company's dedicated site.

As for the 'unlimited free voice calling' offer, the company says the facility is now available across all Airtel Broadband plans. The facility will allow users to make free calls to any network across the country.

Speaking at the launch, Ajai Puri, Director - Operations, Bharti Airtel said, "India is witnessing an explosive growth in data usage and a lot of in-home data consumption is happening over fixed broadband that offers consistent speeds. Airtel has always innovated ahead of the curve and offered its customers best-in-class broadband technology and experience. With 'V-Fiber' and our national optic fiber backbone, we are all set to offer a future ready network for tomorrow's digitally connected homes. This solution, besides reducing our carbon footprint, offers a very quick and convenient upgrade to the customer. We are also delighted to launch our innovative myHome Rewards and unlimited free voice calling facility for our customers."
