Google Chrome has rolled out a new update for its Android app which lets users change the position of the address bar. It can now be moved to the bottom of the app for more flexibility. As per Google, this change makes it easier to use Chrome for Android on devices with different-sized screens, enabling users with varied hand sizes to adjust its position as per their preference for easy browsing.

Google Chrome for Android Update

Google detailed the new update for Chrome on Android in a blog post. It allows users to customise their browsing experience by tweaking the position of the address bar on the web browser. It can be moved to the bottom of the app for better usability, especially on phones having large screens. To do this:

  1. Open the Google Chrome app on Android
  2. Long-press on the address bar and select the Move address bar to bottom option
  3. Alternatively, navigate to the Settings menu on the app
  4. Select address bar and choose your preferred spot

While Android phones do come with a one-handed mode which makes it easier to reach the top of the screen by bringing it down, it requires a pull-down action every time you open the app. On the other hand, moving the address bar to the bottom of the screen on Chrome for Android is permanent. However, this change isn't forced. The address bar is still placed at the top as default, until you choose to move it.

Notably, the Google Chrome for iOS app has carried this feature for more than a year now. It is invoked with the same tap and hold gesture on the browser which brings up the Move address bar to the bottom option.

Google says the new address bar setting will be available on devices starting today and expanded to everyone in the coming weeks. Gadgets 360 staff could not access this feature, even after updating Chrome for Android to the latest version on Pixel. It is likely being rolled out in phases and may take some time to reach all devices.
