Asus impressed us a lot with the ZenFone 5Z (Review) last year, which marked the company's return to the premium smartphone space. With competitive pricing, top-tier specifications, and great construction quality, the ZenFone 5Z was extremely well positioned to take OnePlus 6 (Review) on, and it has made many appearances on our lists of recommended phones since its launch. Now, the company is ready with an update called the 6Z, timed to hit the market just shortly after the OnePlus 7 (Review).

Asus 6Z Summary

The Asus 6Z is a budget flagship contender with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and 4.4-inch notchless screen. Its main selling point is a flip-up camera module that lets you use the primary 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 camera and secondary 13-megapixel wide-angle camera for selfies as well as the usual photos. The camera module needs to flip around every time you want to use face recognition or take a selfie, which means there's a slight delay. Asus has thought of a few tricks though, such as the ability to take sweeping panoramas with one tap, or pivot the module while in the middle of recording a video. You can even set its position manually to take some creatively angled shots.

In terms of design, the 6Z is fairly plain, with only the bright blue Asus logo and text on the rear standing out against the Midnight Black Body. The Twilight Silver option offers a silver-blue gradient. There is a 3.5mm audio socket on the bottom along with the USB Type-C port. An extra button on the right is set to trigger Google Assistant by default but can be reprogrammed. There's no IP rating but Asus has used Gorilla Glass 6 on the front.

Performance is great thanks to the high-end processor and ample RAM. The full-HD+ screen supports HDR and was bright and vibrant in our experience. We were slightly underwhelmed with the cameras at night, as our photos were somtimes a little blurry. Battery life was good but not great, and we think that Asus's promise of two-day usage is optimistic.

The Asus 6Z is a compelling option at its price, and brings a lot of power to a hot market segment.

Its been good 7 months so far, the best feature right now has been 5000 mah battery. It is like carrying a Powerbank in your pocket. Camera takes really stunning pictures with great details thanks to the 48 mp camera.

After a month use I liked the phone very much. - Display is very good. - After a standard mobile use I am getting 1 1/2 day battery back up. Smooth rendering while playing games. - Little heat issue after playing games for 45 mins or long. - Few occasions I found issue in flop camera but solved after resetting the camera setting but camera quality is very good. - Sound quality is just enough. Head phone quality is good. - I hope if they could provide extra length in power cable. - stock android os with few Tweeks. - A little bit heavy for the pocket.

Camera 5/5 Battery 5/5 Gaming 5/5 Performance 5/5 Fast Charging- 5/5. Takes only 2.5hrs to go from 10-90 considering it's a 5000 mAh battery. There's nothing that can go wrong with the phone, even the flip camera closes if the device falls and it doesn't take any damage, I've tried that myself. The only thing that was faulty was the charging cable, it's loose since day 1. A different cable is charging the device just fine. I want to know if I would get a replacement since I paid for the wire as well.
