Asus recently launched a refreshed series of VivoBook laptops called the VivoBook 14 and VivoBook 15 in India. Of the two, the 14-inch version claims to be the world's smallest, most colourful 14-inch Ultrabook. This is a rather odd and awfully specific title to stake claim to, but it is what it is. The new laptop series focuses on compactness and mid-range performance in order to hit that starting price of Rs. 49,990.

Asus VivoBook 14 X412FA-EK295T Summary

The VivoBook 14 X412FA comes in multiple bright colour options and boasts of a modern design, with slim borders around its display. It uses a plastic chassis, but the plastics are of high quality and feel very sturdy. The 14-inch display on the Asus VivoBook 14 has a full-HD resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It looks massive mostly due to the slim bezels on three of its sides. The keys have comfortable travel, are well spaced, and have three levels of backlighting. The size of the trackpad is fairly generous and tracking is smooth.

The Asus VivoBook 14 offers a decent selection of ports for a 14-inch laptop. There are two stereo speakers, placed at the bottom, on either side of the laptop. The charger is a tiny, square brick which is extremely portable.

The Asus Vivobook 14 X412FA features an Intel Core i5-8265U 8th generation quad-core CPU with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. You can opt for a model with an Nvidia GeForce MX230 graphics card too. This Asus VivoBook 14 ships with Windows 10 Home 64-bit, along with apps from Asus such as Asus Sync and MyAsus.

The VivoBook 14 makes for a very good portable work laptop thanks to its portable size and low weight. The fingerprint sensor adds an extra layer of convenience, which we appreciate. For multimedia use, the VivoBook 14 falls a bit short primarily due to the display's inability to produce very vibrant colours. With actual day-to-day use, the Asus VivoBook 14 averaged only around 4.5-5 hours with medium to light workloads, which was not bad.

  • Good ultrabook at an affordable price for everyday tasks.
Soumya Banerjee (Jul 1, 2019) on Flipkart
I bought X412FA partly because my 3 year old Lenovo Ideapad 300 all plastic chassis was disintegrating and partly because it was being sold at such an amazing price on Flipkart couldn't resist. I would like to elaborate the specs of this machine based on my usage of it 1. Core i5 8265U : hard to believe but it absolutely decimates my Dell Inspiron 14 7460's Core i7 7500U. 8265U consumes lesser power yet has 4 cores, 6MB cache and higher Turbo speed. This really shows up in build times of my Maven / Gradle projects, despite both systems being on fairly fast SSDs. There is no reason to choose a yesteryear's Core i7 U series processor over 8th/9th gen Core i5 U series. 2. 8 GB DDR4 RAM : Out of this 4 GB DDR 4 RAM is soldered on the mainboard. There is one DIMM slot to which I installed a Crucial 16 GB DDR4 module, so totalling to 20GB DDR4 RAM. All in all there is room for expansion if you need that kind of RAM. 3. 512 GB SSD : Asus provided Intel 600p series 512 GB NVMe PCIe x 4 lanes SSD. Definitely read / write speeds over random IO operations is faster compared to SATA 3 SSDs. I have not benchmarked it yet. One thing to remember - keep the AHCI mode set to Intel Premium RST in UEFI if you ever decide to install Windows OS yourself. I am yet researching if 600p series SSD support inbuilt Intel's 2nd gen Optane or not. I did see Optane related cache folders getting created in my root partition. All in all, 512 GB NVMe SSD with 228 TBW endurance - Asus has you well covered there. Good choice of storage! 4. Display : Display while FHD, is of poor quality. After calibrating using Xrite i1 and DisplayCal, the resultant ICC profile did make the colours a bit even - still just about 59% sRGB coverage. Obviously at this price point you can't ask for 100% Adobe or even sRGB coverage. Somewhere Asus ought to cut the corners. Display is a TN panel with no ghosting when viewing from an angle. 5. Body : Mostly ABS plastic with metal back and front chassis. That's ok for a machine at this price point. There is no flex on the surface where you rest your palms or from the keyboard either. 6. Keyboard : Excellent quality backlit keyboard. Great tactile feedback and a joy to type. Backlit has 3 levels of brightness. One thing I did find odd was the placement of the power button right next to the delete key, happened once - I put my machine to sleep when I just wanted to delete a character from the file! Be careful.. 7. Touchpad : Asus provides Microsoft Precision Touchpad compliant drivers. So settings are controlled from Windows 10 Touchpad settings. Touchpad too is of very good quality - has a MacBook's glass like surface. Also it registers all multi touch and gestures accurately. Really I didn't find the need for an external mouse with this laptop. 8. Connectivity : a. Realtek 802.11AC wireless which worked pretty good with my 867 Mbps 5Ghz router. I didn't experience any drop outs. b. Usual HDMI 1.4 is provided. Works with 4k panels @ 30Hz refresh rate. No issues with 1080p @ 60Hz. c. MicroSD card slot (from Realtek) is actually quite nice to have since I don't have SDXC full sized cards and each time I need to get one of those adapters. In X412, I can plug in my MicroSD cards straight in. So more of a personal preference there - can be a hit or miss for others. Please see the Card slot is USB 2.0 speed, so transfers will be slow compared to MacBook Pro/Air. d. USB C Type 3.1 post is NOT a thunderbolt port. So no plugging in a display port from your 4k monitor :( but otherwise works as advertised. Also 1 x USB A 3.1 port is provided and another USB A 2.0 port on the other side. 9. Battery : rated at 7.4V 37Wh. At 63% brightness - which corresponds to 120 Cd/m2 standard brightness levels and doing nothing the computed battery life was little over 10 hours. Actually quite good for such low capacity battery. Really goes on to show how efficient CPUs have become over the years with shrinking lithography and how better Windows 10 has become. Once you unplug I didn't see any rogue process/ service running. Clock speeds were mostly below 1.2GHz. You might be able to extract little more battery life with lower brightness and turning on Windows 10 Battery saver. 10. OS : Asus ships Windows 10 Home Single Language 1809 version. I anyways upgraded to Windows 10 Pro 1903 as I need to work with Hyper-V. All in all I like my Windows 10 systems over my MacBook Pro provided I have taken enough time to configure them - which usually takes me a week. A nicely configured (all those settings under registry and Group Policy Editor) running minimalistic Windows 10 is definitely a joy to work with. 11. Heat : The back metal panel does get hot when stressed, so might not want to keep it on your lap if you are running something CPU intensive. 12. UEFI BIOS : My version shipped with v302. Boot menu is ESC and BIOS is F2. Might need to turn off Fast Boot to access them.
