Taiwanese personal computer maker Acer is planning to open new outlets in 2,000 small Indian towns this year through its "outreach programme", a top company executive said here Wednesday.

"We want to be in all those places with population of more than five lakh," said Harish K. Kohli, managing director, Acer India Pvt. Ltd.

Kohli said the company had managed to reach 970 such towns last year.

He was in the city to inaugurate the company's 109th mall. Acer India plans to add 50 such malls during this calendar year.

"In last six months, we have set up 25 such malls pan-India," Kohli said.

He said Acer, makers of notebook and tablets, was keen to set up outlets in small towns, as due to increased purchasing power of people in such towns they wanted to buy products nearer to their home.

"People are not willing to travel to nearest commercial hubs to buy things. They want to buy closer to home," he pointed out.

Increased educational level had led to rise in demands for notebooks and tablets among the children in smaller towns, he added.
