Motorola has started rolling out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for its first-generation Moto X. Senior Director of Software Product Management at Motorola, David Schuster confirmed the news in a Google+ post and revealed that full deployment of the Android 5.1 Lollipop update has begun for US Retail, Brazil Retail and Rogers in Canada.

Last month Motorola announced that its first-generation Moto X would start receiving the Android 5.1 Lollipop update in a few weeks. Notably, Moto X (Gen 1) is receiving the update directly from Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and had not received the Android 5.0 Lollipop update at all.

The official changelog of the Moto X lists the changes that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update brings, including Material Design; new notifications that will appear on the lock screen and can intelligently ranked by type and who sent them; a redesigned Overview space; new Moto Display and Ambient Display which will show relevant notifications when the phone's display is off; a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings; a new pull-down menu for selecting different Wi-Fi access points or different paired Bluetooth devices, and now the battery settings panel will show an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update for Moto X (Gen 1) handset will also let users block interruptions until the next alarm, alter notification volume controls while media is playing, apart from dismissing a heads-up notification and swipe it up to remove it from the screen. Improvements in ART (Android Runtime), which will result in the faster opening of apps and other performance improvements, are also included. The update also incorporates Motorola Assist, Motorola Active Display, Moto Voice (Touchless Control), and Moto Actions.

To recall, the Moto E (Gen 1), Moto E (Gen 2), and Moto X (Gen 2) have already received the Android 5.1 Lollipop update.
