  • The new update for YouTube for iOS adds iPhone X support
  • 'Pinch to zoom' feature has been added
  • When zoomed in, videos will be cropped to 19.5:9

If you own an iPhone X then soon you will be able to watch YouTube videos in full-screen mode with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. YouTube for iOS is receiving an update that adds full-screen viewing support for the iPhone X.

iPhone X, Apple's first edge-to-edge smartphone with a Super Retina display, was launched in September. iPhone X users, however, were not able to watch videos covering the entire screen, as YouTube, like most other video streaming sites, offers content in an 16:9 aspect ratio. Now, YouTube for iOS v12.43 gets a 'pinch to zoom' feature to switch to full-screen. As it crops content to a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, when viewing content in full-screen on the iPhone X some of the video will be cropped from the top and bottom as well as the notch. The update for YouTube for iOS is now available, and users can upgrade right away.

Apple may have unveiled the iPhone X a couple of months back but the majority of apps are yet to support the new 2:1 aspect ratio. Developers are still working on adding support for the new aspect ratio. We can say that Google's YouTube is one of the first to be fully optimised for the new iPhone X. H

DisplayMate recently praised the display technology of the new iPhone X model. The display calibration and testing firm claimed that the OLED-based Super Retina display of the iPhone X was the "most colour accurate" display. DisplayMate claimed that the full-HD+ display of the iPhone X has 32 percent higher pixel count than a conventional HDTV, with 1125x2436 pixels resolution and a pixel density of 458 pixels per inch (ppi).
