  • 4K capable screens are required for UHD streaming from Netflix
  • Not all subscriptions are offering option of streaming in 4K

Netflix has allowed users to stream 4K content for quite some time now but kept PC users away from this privilege up until now. The video streaming service has now announced that users with Windows 10 PCs will now be able to stream content in Ultra HD resolution using the Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft has clarified that in order to stream 4K content from Netflix, the user's set up "must have a 4K-capable screen and use a 7th Gen Intel Core Processor." Further it should be noted that neither all content is available in Ultra-HD resolution nor all subscriptions allow streaming in 4K. In order to enjoy the 4K content users will be required to upgrade to Premium monthly subscription, which is available for Rs. 800 a month in India.

"Your binge-watching favourites on Netflix are now available in 4K exclusively on compatible PCs and 2-in-1 devices, on Windows 10. Check out the new streaming experience with Microsoft Edge, the only browser that supports Netflix 4K content," Microsoft said in a blog post on Monday.

The blog post includes a plug for Microsoft Edge's power consumption claims, says that Edge users will be able to watch at least 1 more episode than Chrome users due to the improved battery life they will enjoy. The new Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, premieres on Friday.

Netflix has clearly stated on its website that a download speed of at least 25Mbps per stream is recommended to receive Ultra HD content.

Recently, Google started testing 4K UHD movie purchase and rental options through Google Play store and Google Play Movies & TV app. The company also started shipping its Chromecast Ultra dongle, with support for 4K, earlier this month in the US.
