In India, we currently have a good selection of gaming laptops with Nvidia's latest GeForce RTX GPUs. We just recently tested our first laptop with a GeForce RTX 2060 — the Dell G7 15 7590 — and it's now time to take a look at another one from Asus, called the ROG Strix Scar II (GL504GV).
Asus ROG Strix SCAR II (GL504GV) Summary
The Asus ROG Strix Scar II (GL504GV) is a high-end gaming laptop, with a flash design thanks to lots of RGB LEDs. The laptop is fairly heavy at 2.4kg but its dimensions are quite compact thanks to the narrow bezels around the display. The ports are well spaced and easy to get to as well. the keyboard supports 4-zone RGB backlighting and there's even a RGB strip on the front of the laptop which can be customised.
It has a 15.6-inch, full-HD IPS panel with a 3ms response time and a 144Hz refresh rate. The ROG Strix Scar II is available with either an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 or an RTX 2070. The CPU is an Intel Core i7-8750H hexa-core chip, and you get 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 1TB FireCuda SSHD and a PCIe NVME 256GB SSD. Windows 10 comes preinstalled, along with the Armoury Crate app from Asus, for controlling the lighting and monitor temperatures.
Expectedly, the Asus ROG Strix Scar II had no trouble handling ordinary Windows 10 tasks. The laptop runs cool and quiet when you're not gaming or doing anything CPU-intensive.The ROG Strix Scar II does a very good job in games, and one of the reasons for this, besides having a fast SSD, is the overclocked RTX 2060.
Battery life is one area in which this laptop falls flat. With actual usage, even in the ‘Power Saver' mode, the best we could achieve was a little over two hours.

Great laptop for Concept ArtistsSubin Rajendran (May 3, 2019) on AmazonI bought this laptop to replace my MacBook Pro 2018 for my concept design work, and I can honestly say it more than lives up to the promise of performance from Asus. There was no throttling due to poor thermals like on the MBP, Zbrush works like a charm with no crashes (zbrush would constantly crash on the MBP without warning, it aint nice losing your work when you are halfway through), good render times on cycles in blender when using either CPU or GPU, keyshot runs great without any hiccups and 2D packages like Photoshop CC and Sketchbook Pro runs great. Expect the fans to be loud when scenes are being rendered or using EEVEE in the active view port for Blender, but then again that's up to the workload, I would suggest using a pair of headphones when working on this laptop. As for the gaming performance I haven't done much gaming on this laptop, so far the very few games i have played on it runs great at the highest settings albeit at 1080 resolution. One thing to note is the windows 10 1809 redstone 5 update will cause the Asus Aura software that controls the rgb lighting to be wiped out, so those looking forward to playing around with the rgb lighting post update will be sorely disappointed. Oh yeah without the 1809 update you wont get the RTX cores to work on RTX enabled games/softwares (DXR is available post 1809 update only). So in conclusion its a great portable workstation with great thermals if your work involves using 3D and 2D packages, I definitely recommend this laptop for concept artists.Is this review helpful?
