Carmageddon was a particularly controversial game when it first arrived on the scene in 1997, thanks to its graphically violent depictions and encouragement to run over pedestrians. But the series has been missing from Sony and Microsoft's consoles, and Stainless Games is looking to rectify that.

Titled 'Carmageddon: Max Damage', the developer announced a new game in the series for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Monday night, describing the entry as one "where your opponents are a bunch of crazies in a twisted mix of killing machines" and the way to score points and win comes by way of "mowing down the local inhabitants".

"Carmageddon: Max Damage features more cars than ever, more environments than ever, and most importantly more pedestrians than ever," publishing director at Stainless Games, Jason Garber said in a post on the PlayStation Blog. The company is clearly sticking to its formula of delivering a never-seen-before gore experience, though results of its last iteration - 2015's Carmageddon: Reincarnation - were less than satisfactory.

The game will be available as both an offline and online experience, with multiple modes enhanced by 90 power-ups, Stainless claimed. These will either "maim your enemy, enhance your performance, or just screw things up". As for the modes itself, you can either battle AI opponents and complete all the laps, wreck them all or kill every last pedestrian in "Classic Carma", or chase or be chased in an online setting called "Fox 'n' Hounds".

There isn't any set date for release, with Stainless putting it at mid-2016 for consoles only. For now, have a look at the trailer released alongside.
