Earlier this month it was known that Sony is planning a major update for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) console. The v2.50 system software update, codenamed Yukimura, will finally hit the console on Thursday.

The PS4 System Software 2.50 'Yukimara' update sports a colossal list of upgrades, as per the list of changes on Sony's blog.

These include backing up your game data to an external hard drive, and the much-awaited suspend/ resume feature which lets you continue your game instantaneously, similar to the Xbox One, will be present.

Other changes include new friend features (from the addition of a 'Facebook friend finder', improved friend requests, a more streamlined Party process, new 'Friends Who Play This' section, to the joining friends in-game directly from the news feed), new Trophy features (automatic Trophy screenshots, posting of Trophy information via the Share button, new Trophy filters), improved and expanded accessibility options (including DualShock 4 button remapping, zoom for displayed pictures, inverted colours for all system functions, text-to-speech and enlarged text for all GUI, and more).

Finally, the PS4 v2.5 system software update also brings 60fps support for Remote Play and Share Play, automatic installation option for system software updates, sub-account upgrades, new verified accounts for developers and community managers, and Dailymotion integration for sharing.

But this isn't all, the PS Vita and the PS App for smartphones and tablets is receiving an update as well to play nice with your PS4.

"PlayStation Vita and PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets will also receive system software updates tonight, adding complementary features to those added to PS4. PS Vita update version 3.50 and PlayStation App update version 2.50 will add new accessibility options, including enlarged text, increased contrast and more. This update also enables PS Vita to support 60fps streaming for Remote Play," said John Koller VP of Platforms Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

While most PS4 updates had focused on adding "stability", this is a welcome change of pace. However like most firmware updates, we would suggest waiting a day or two before downloading it as you may run the risk of bricking your PS4.
