Does your little one suffer from eczema? You're not alone. It's a tough road for many parents, like Mrs. B, whose son's skin condition has kept them all from a good night's sleep for eight years. But what's causing this surge in eczema cases, especially in developed nations like the U.S. and Finland?

Research points to environmental factors, particularly the chemicals lurking in our surroundings. From synthetic fabrics in our clothes to the smoke from cigarettes and wildfires, these substances are playing a significant role in the rise of eczema cases.

Take diisocyanates and xylene, for example. They're not household names, but they're found in everyday items like spandex, paint, and even car exhaust. Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to eczema, triggering itchiness and inflammation, particularly in children.

But why are these chemicals wreaking havoc on our skin? It all comes down to our skin's microbiome, the millions of tiny organisms that call it home. These friendly bacteria produce essential oils, like ceramides, which act as a protective barrier against infections and eczema. However, when exposed to diisocyanates and xylene, these bacteria stop producing ceramides, leaving our skin vulnerable.

And it's not just our clothes that are to blame. Bed sheets made from synthetic fabrics can harbour harmful bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, worsening eczema symptoms. So what can we do about it?

Better pollution detectors could help us track these chemicals and predict eczema flare-ups. Meanwhile, avoiding products that disrupt our skin's microbial balance, like certain skincare products and detergents, could offer relief, especially for young children. And researchers are exploring probiotic treatments, like Roseomonas mucosa, to replenish the skin's bacteria and alleviate eczema symptoms.

Understanding the environmental factors behind eczema is crucial for protecting our children's health. By addressing these chemical triggers, we can strive to return to a time when eczema was less common and ensure a brighter, itch-free future for our kids.
