Highlights
  • A smaller PS4 may be announced around the Tokyo Game Show.
  • The PS4 Neo might be revealed at the same time.
  • All PS4 games from October have to work on the PS4 and Neo.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Macquarie Securities analyst Damian Thong said Sony might also introduce a smaller PS4 along with the PS4 Neo. Thong believes they would be revealed at a game show in September. For its part Sony declined to comment.

This would tie in with what several publishers have informed Gadgets 360, that their upcoming releases from October onwards have to support the PS4 Neo. This is in step with Giantbomb's post that stated all games from October require to work with the PS4 and PS4 Neo.

A September announcement for the device would hold ground what with the likes of Eurogamer and French video game distributor Innelec claiming a release this year.

While Sony has acknowledged its existence but yet to formally announce it or what it would be called when it finally hits retail, the company has made it a point for fans to know that it will not replace the PS4 in any way.

"PS4 is PS4 new high-end PS4 is still PS4 so you know the life-cycle is not going to be shorter," said Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios in conversation with Gameswelt TV a week ago.

In addition to this, it announced during its investor day that the PS4 Neo won't be the beginning of regular upgrades similar to mobile or PC markets, perhaps setting the stage for a formal announcement soon.

As for the PS4 slim, it isn't out of the realm of possibility. In the past we've seen the PS3 get a size reduction almost three years after release in 2009 while the PS1 and PS2 had smaller revisions to their hardware as well.
