Highlights
  • Vivo X20 Plus UD’s TENAA listing shows dual rear cameras, 4GB RAM
  • The phone may feature 3800mAh battery, 128GB storage, octa-core SoC
  • The UD in the name likely refers to ‘Under Display’ fingerprint sensor

Vivo X20 Plus UD with in-display fingerprint sensor has been certified by TENAA in China. The company had showcased the world's first ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning technology on the Vivo X20 Plus at CES 2018. Although the handset looks similar to the Vivo X20 Plus, it does not have a square rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Based on the 'UD' nomenclature, it is expected that the smartphone will have an 'under display' fingerprint scanner.

In terms of specifications, the Vivo X20 Plus UD will sport a 6.43-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels, according to the Chinese certification site TENAA's listing. The smartphone is powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core processor and it features 4GB RAM. When it comes to the camera, the Vivo X20 Plus UD sports a dual camera setup at the back, with a 12-megapixel lens and a 5-megapixel lens. On the front, the handset will feature a 12-megapixel camera.

Internal storage of the Vivo phone would be 128GB, with support for expansion up to 256GB. It will be powered by a 3800mAh battery. Connectivity features mention in the TENAA page include Bluetooth, USB support, and 4G Internet. The handset's dimensions are said to be 165.2x80.02x7.35mm, and its weight 183.1 gram. Colour options will be Black Gold, Champagne Gold, Rose Gold, and Matte Black, the listing suggests.

The new development emerges weeks after the Chinese company announced its partnership with Synaptics to bring its native in-display fingerprint scanning technology called Clear ID. The in-display fingerprint scanning technology on the upcoming Vivo smartphone sits between the glass protection and OLED panel. According to Synaptics, the proprietary technology is as faster as alternative biometrics methods such as 3D facial recognition such as Apple's Face ID and is highly secured, too.

Earlier, Synaptics had claimed that as many as 70 million units of in-display fingerprint sensors will be available this year. Mainly developed for thin-bezel OLED display panels with the taller-than-usual 18:9 aspect ratio, the Synaptics Clear ID sensors are mainly designed to replace the widely available fingerprint sensing solutions.

To recall, the Vivo X20 Plus UD was spotted on China's 3C certification site earlier this month, with the UD probably implying the under display fingerprint sensor. Vivo had told Gadgets 360 at CES that it was not certain if the X20 Plus branding would be retained for the phone with under-display fingerprint sensor when it is eventually launched.
