British game show The Crystal Maze, which wowed audiences back in the 90s, is set to return with a one-off charity special involving celebrities, Channel 4 has told multiple sources.

The series has been off-air for 21 years, and the new episode is set to be a part of Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser come October. While British tabloid The Sun reports that David Tennant – of Doctor Who and Jessica Jones fame – is being approached to host the special, sources close to The Guardian and BuzzFeed have said otherwise.

The British game show originally aired from 1990 – 1995 for a total of 83 episodes, with Richard O'Brien as presenter for first 3 years, followed by Ed Tudor-Pole post that. The show’s format saw a team of six taking part in a number of challenges across four themed zones, which would earn them “time crystals” giving them more time with the final challenge inside “The Crystal Dome”.

At the height of its popularity, The Crystal Maze drew 6 million viewers and has been voted the best British game show by audiences repeatedly over the years. The show’s success led to the publishing of a dozen books, the creation of small-scale replicas around the world, video games, and one board game.

The show was revived as a live event in King’s Cross area of London earlier this year, with the help of a crowdfunding project on website Indiegogo. The one-off celebrity episode of The Crystal Maze will be shot on the same location, according to BuzzFeed.
