Adding to the spirit of festivity and celebration, Atari is giving away 100 of its games for free for just one day. The games which cost $ 9.99 on the Apple App Store are being made available for free on all Apple devices that have iOS 3.0 or higher.

The app, which is called Atari's Greatest Hits, has seen over 5 million downloads in the Apple Store. It sells itself as a chance to relive the golden age of gaming with a collection of the most popular retro games from the 70s and 80s.

The 100 classic arcade games, which were made for the Atari 2600, are arranged alphabetically and are available within the app for separate download, appearing in original cabinet and box art design. The main menu screen offers a generic categorization of games.

Users can now download the app and unlock it for all devices that are synced to their Apple App Store account. Popular games such as Asteroids, Centipede and Pong, can be played with the original Atari joystick. This pays homage to each of the originals, with controls designed to mimic what Atari fans remember from 30 years ago.

The games also feature Bluetooth multiplayer for head to head games such as Warlords and Tempest. The games remain free to play as long as they are not uninstalled or removed.

We were unpleasantly surprised to discover that the 100 free games did not feature the iconic Space Invaders, which in so many ways was one of the defining features of Atari. However, Atari making 100 of its games free for even one day is a godsend for all hardcore Atari fans and reminds us once again of the reigning giant that was.
