Lionsgate has released the first trailer for an upcoming sci-fi thriller Rememory, starring Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage. The studio is adopting an interesting distribution technique: Rememory will first release on Google Play Movies for free for a two-week period starting August 24. It will then have a limited theatrical release and arrive on video-on-demand services from September 8.

The film won't be available globally on Google Play, and will be restricted to Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Belize, Botswana, Cambodia, Canada, Fiji, Iceland, Ireland, Jamaica, Macedonia, Malta, Namibia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, the Philippines, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Co-written and directed by Mark Palansky (Penelope), Rememory is about detective Sam Bloom (Dinklage) who tries to solve the murder of scientific pioneer Gordon Dunn (Martin Donovan), who created a technology that allows you to extract memories and watch them on an external device. Sort of like the Pensieve from Harry Potter.

Bloom steals the memory device to aid in his investigation, but it soon leads him to "unexpected and dangerous places". The film also stars Julia Ormond (Mad Men, Temple Grandin), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Henry Ian Cusick, Colin Lawrence, and Évelyne Brochu. Yelchin passed away in a freak accident last year, and this is one of his last on-screen appearances.

Rememory premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year to middling reviews from most critics. It has been received much better by audiences, so if the trailer seems intriguing, you can find out for yourself next week.
