He claims that in addition to Nintendo’s new console, 2017 has Windows 10 Game Mode and Xbox Scorpio among other platforms to support. Of these the Nintendo Switch should see most of the company’s development efforts.

That aside, he explains that smartphone titles in the first half of 2016 did poorly. The company’s mantra for 2017 is “something else” in order to stand out from the competition and not make the same cookie-cutter titles it’s been making. Furthermore, Matsuda stated that smartphone users aren’t just looking for casual experiences but hardcore titles as well. And with 80 percent of the smartphone games market concentrated in Japan, North America, and China, he observes that there’s no need for worldwide smartphone game releases.

What’s more is the company is interested in the Middle East and India as potential markets. Considering its failed expansion attempts into Latin America and India a couple of years prior, it will be interesting to see what form these endeavours take.
