Xiaomi, as expected, has announced Mi Protect insurance service for smartphones and tablets bought through the Mi.com website.

The new Mi Protect plan covers accidental and liquid damages. The company clearly notes that the Mi Protect plan can be bought online via Mi.com bundled along with purchase of Mi device, but cannot be purchased individually for already owned Xiaomi smartphones and tablets.

The Mi Protect plan will be available at Rs. Rs 275 for the Redmi 2 and Redmi 2 Prime smartphones, and at Rs. 499 for the Mi 4 16GB, Mi 4i 16GB, and MiPad. In addition, Mi Protect users will also get free-of-cost pick and drop service for repair of the handset. The company in a press statement confirms that users will get a second servicing for free within one year of activation. The complete terms and regulations can be read at the dedicated company website.

Besides this, Mi Protect insurance service will also let users block their SIM cards on the stolen device from anywhere around the world. The service also includes SIM misuse insurance cover of up to Rs. 3,000. Furthermore, 1GB of cloud storage feature also comes as a part of the service and free call assistance to new smartphone users. Mi Protect plan users will also get access to 24x7 call centre support to report damages.

For the insurance cover Xiaomi, has collaborated with OneAssist, which would reach out to the customer to assess the damaged device and would follow the process after confirmation. The official website without detailing the exact amount adds, "You just need to pay nominal excess charges or processing fee as per the terms and condition shared with you during the time of activation."

The official website also reveals that users can make two claims during the tenure of Mi Protect membership; though points out that the previous claim should not be under Total Loss or Beyond Economic Repair category, which is a condition when the repair cost of handset is 75 percent of the original value.
