Mozilla, better known for its popular web browser, Firefox, has created its own Firefox OS tablet prototype, to test the operating system in the form factor and chipset design.

The prototype tablet is made by Foxconn, who is also responsible for making Apple products. Some of the specifications of the tablet include a 10-inch screen with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, 1GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB of in-built storage.

Other features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, microSD card slot, Micro-USB port, front and rear cameras, and a 7,000mAh battery on-board.

These Firefox OS running tablets are speculated to skip their introduction in major tablet markets like US, and will instead focus on emerging markets where the smartphone and tablet consumption is comparatively less.

Firefox recently joined Deutsche Telekom, Spain's Telefonica, South Korea's LG, US-based Qualcomm, and Chinese manufacturers ZTE and TCL/Alcatel in creating an Open Web Device Compliance Review Board.

The new entity will set technical standards for an open mobile operating system which would be an alternative to the closed systems now used in smartphones based on Apple's iOS or Google's Android.

The first Firefox OS based smartphone ZTE Open, was also made available in October 2013 priced at Rs. 6,990. The ZTE Open features a 3.5-inch screen with HVGA display.
