Highlights
  • SwiftKey was hit by a privacy breach in early August
  • SwiftKey suspended the sync service back then but has now restarted it
  • Email and phone number predictions should work fine now

SwiftKey early this month had acknowledged it was receiving user complaints regarding a privacy breach, with users seeing email and phone number predictions associated with other users. Attributing the problem to its sync feature, Microsoft-owned SwiftKey suspended its sync services to stop the breach spreading. After re-enabling its sync services with a new app version, the company has now rolled out a stable version with correct email and phone number predictions appearing while typing.

Microsoft-owned SwiftKey had re-activated its sync services after the suspension but with a very limited access to the email and phone number synchronisation. It could only predict regular words, with no information fetched from user's email and social media accounts.

The SwiftKey app is now back with normalcy to its sync services with more secure email, phone number predictions with '@' mentions for Twitter profiles. The already learned number, email, and @ predictions present before the privacy breach have been deleted. The company has said the app will relearn everything in order to work efficiently as before.

"We take users' privacy and security very seriously and are committed to maintaining world-class standards for our community.", SwiftKey had said on its blog in July after the breach. The updated SwiftKey app is available now on Google Play.
