The VLC for Mobile app by VideoLAN has received an update for iOS devices that brings new features. It also includes an updated watchOS 2 app for Apple Watch. The update brings the app version to 2.7.

The updated app has dropped support for iOS 6.1. This means that the new VLC for Mobile app is now only compatible with iOS 7.0 and later OS versions. It features Spotlight search support along with Split View support to enable a side-by-side app interface on compatible iPad models. Also supported is Touch ID unlocking.

Besides the inclusion for SMB file sharing support as mentioned in the official changelog, the app would also play the media content saved in folders on remote servers as a list.

On the user interface front, the app comes with a reworked networking UI and an improved UI support Right-to-Left languages. The interface will also show chapter duration during playback. Several additions included in the updated app are option to configure gestures and support for music albums with more than one disk. The recently played network stream URL, login information, and cloud login credentials, are now shared across all devices. The app includes a reworked Apple Watch extension for watchOS 2. The VLC for Mobile v2.7 app is available to download from the App Store.

The company for a short period incorrectly included Apple TV support in the release notes as well. This still suggests the support will arrive soon. However, no particular dates have been given yet.

Earlier this month VLC finally arrived for Chrome OS-powered notebooks. Much like its client on other platforms, VLC for Chrome OS supports a large pool of video and audio files. The player also supports subtitles with auto-detection, and offers playback of streams, local and on the Internet.
