Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva), retired piano teachers in their 80’s, live alone peacefully in a small Parisian apartment.
Their daughter lives abroad in Britain along with her family.
As the couple sail through their slow-paced lives, a stroke catches Anne off guard. After a series of subsequent health mishaps, she is left paralysed on the right side.
Georges must now serve as her (slightly-irritated) caretaker, with this new equation impacting their relationship.
The awarded drama is loosely based on director Michael Haneke’s personal anecdotes of his aunt suffering from a degenerative disease.
