Disney has released a new trailer for A Wrinkle in Time, the first big screen adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 sci-fi fantasy novel from Selma director Ava DuVernay. It helps set up the central premise of the story: three kids on a mission to find one's father, as they cross strange worlds and meet mysterious individuals, who inform them they must save the world.

From a screenplay penned by Frozen writer Jennifer Lee, A Wrinkle in Time stars the likes of Chris Pine (Star Trek) as the missing father Dr. Alexander Murry, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling as the three Mrs. Ws – Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who respectively – alongside Zach Galifianakis as the Happy Medium, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Black Mirror) as Dr. Kate Murry, and Michael Peña as Red.

The three kids involve the two Murry siblings, Meg (Storm Reid) and Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), and the former's classmate Calvin O'Keefe (Levi Miller). The two-minute trailer starts by introducing Meg as a bright student who's been suffering since her father mysteriously disappeared, before giving us a glimpse at what transpired.

"Your dad wanted to touch the stars," Mbatha-Raw's Kate says. Post that, it delves into pseudo-scientific explanations of time travel, noting the shortest distance between two points isn't always a straight line. "Not if you use a fifth dimension," she adds.

Post that, we see the children arrive in different strange worlds, where they meet the three Mrs. Ws in vast open plains. Mrs. Which (Winfrey) narrates that they've been looking for warriors, and that their father is trapped by an "evil energy". Of course, the only one that can rescue him is Meg herself, which is necessary for a hero's call to journey.

There's a lot of stunning imagery in the new trailer for A Wrinkle in Time, including Mrs. Who running alongside flowers, a giant made entirely of leaves, and a flying leaf. It's clear that the film is making great use of its $100 million+ budget, and hopefully it'll deliver on the story front too.

If it does, we might be looking at a new franchise from Disney, given A Wrinkle in Time is the first of five books in L'Engle's Time Quintet, which was followed by A Wind in the Door, and A Swiftly Tilting Planet among others.

A Wrinkle in Time is out March 9, 2018 worldwide.
