Fans Outrage Over Chrono Trigger on Steam Being a Mobile Port

Beloved role-playing game Chrono Trigger made its way to the PC for the very first time via Steam. The release of this classic took everyone by surprise. And not in a good way.

Reason being, Chrono Trigger on Steam is essentially a direct port of the mobile version of the game. Fans have taken to Steam’s review section for the game to call out its poor visuals, lack of options, and a user interface that’s suited for touchscreens rather than PC. It currently has mostly negative reviews on Steam.

“All you need to know is that this is a straight port of the mobile version, and includes a horrible font and disgusting sprite filtering. There are no graphics options apart from resolution,” reads one review.

“This is the bad mobile engine that they use for everything. Touch menu controls everywhere, all the tiles look like they were copy pasted and have a horrible filter put on them,” claims another.

“A very lazy port of the mobile version of the game. The tap overlay is still there as if you should be clicking it with a mouse even when you play with a gamepad. Just overall bad UI and the aliasing of the sprites is excessive. I'll be sticking to the DS or SNES version instead,” says one user.

After hitting the SNES, Chrono Trigger released on original PlayStation (PS1), Nintendo DS as well as Nintendo’s Virtual Console for Wii and Wii U in addition to the aforementioned iOS and Android versions.

Square Enix’s efforts on PC have been mixed at best. With Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition slated for Steam next week, re-releasing one of the greatest RPGs of all time in such a pathetic state doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. More so with PC games being as expensive as they are and PC hardware being equally prohibitive if not more so.

Nonetheless, Chrono Trigger on Steam is Rs. 900 ($15 in the US) though we’d suggest playing it via an emulator or on the Nintendo DS instead.
