  • Mario Kart Tour will be free to start
  • This is similar to how Super Mario Run works
  • Super Mario Run revenue did not meet Nintendo's expectations

Mario Kart Tour for Android and iOS will work similar to Super Mario Run. According to DeNA, the company developing the game, it will be free to start, much like Super Mario Run.

"DeNA CEO said 'Mario Kart Tour', a Nintendo-DeNA smartphone game planned for FY18, will be free to start," tweeted The Wall Street Journal's Takashi Mochizuki.

What this means is, when Mario Kart Tour is out, you'll be able to access specific parts of the game and not others until you pay for access. In the case of Super Mario Run, this amounts to Rs. 799. Safe to say, we should see something similar for Mario Kart Tour. Considering that this choice of business model resulted in Super Mario Run performing below Nintendo's expectations, how Mario Kart Tour fares commercially will be a point of concern.

It also makes us wonder if Mario Kart Tour, much like Super Mario Run will end up needed a persistent Internet connection. If so, it could make it a pain to play, particularly in areas that don't have the best connectivity.

Following Super Mario RunAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Fire Emblem Heroes, Mario Kart Tour is Nintendo's next mobile game. Interestingly, Nintendo late last month announced that its social network app for mobile, Miitomo will shut down this year.

Previously, Nintendo also announced that it is partnering with Illumination for a movie called Mario. Illumination is known for animated hit films such as Despicable Me and Minions.
