NASA recently conducted test drives of mini autonomous rovers set to explore the moon's surface. These suitcase-sized rovers are part of the Cooperative Autonomous Distributed Robotic Exploration (CADRE) project, demonstrating the capability of robotic spacecraft to work collectively without direct human intervention.

Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California prepared three of these small rovers for a drive test alongside a base station, which will be mounted on a lunar lander. The testing involved navigating the rugged terrain of Mars Yard to simulate lunar conditions.

During the August 2023 tests, it was confirmed that the mini CADRE rovers could operate in unison, adjusting their path to avoid obstacles. These rovers will be powered by solar panels and equipped with cameras, sensors, and ground-penetrating radar to map the lunar surface in 3D.

A significant aspect of the testing was ensuring the rovers could function autonomously, even during the extreme lighting conditions on the moon. Night drives were conducted under large flood lamps to mimic lunar daytime lighting, while the rovers were also subjected to vibration and thermal tests to assess their durability.

To simulate space conditions, the rovers underwent thermal vacuum chamber testing to withstand extreme temperatures and electromagnetic interference and compatibility testing to ensure electronic subsystems functioned without interference.

The successful testing of these mini rovers marks a significant step towards NASA's goal of exploring and understanding the moon's surface. With their ability to operate collectively and autonomously, these rovers are poised to provide valuable insights into lunar geology and help pave the way for future human exploration.
