Samsung Unveils 1.5TB Wireless Media Streaming Drive With Built-In Battery

Samsung has teamed-up with Seagate to introduced a 1.5TB wireless media drive that lets users store their media content and stream it to different platforms. The Samsung Wireless media drive features an maximum suggested retail price of $179, and will be available globally.

The Samsung Wireless media drive can stream media content to smartphones or computers. Compatible with smartphones running Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and above, the media drive also lets users stream media content to Windows XP and OS X 10.6 or later running computers.

The Samsung Wireless media drive can connect with up to five devices at a time over Wi-Fi, and also features a USB 3.0 port for transferring the content. Besides this, the media streaming hard drive includes its own built-in battery, which besides powering the drive, can also charge the synced smartphone's battery - functioning as a power bank.

The Samsung Wireless app gives users access to content on the media streaming drive. Users can connect to the Samsung Wireless drive by choosing the "Samsung Wireless" network from the device's Wi-Fi settings. The app will initially launch showing all the content that is stored on the device. The app lets users navigate the content library with a traditional file/folder view.

"Samsung HDD continues to drive innovation of storage solution for enterprise level to consumer applications" stated Doug DeHaan, General Manager, Samsung HDD division. "Smartphones and tablets are more and more becoming the preferred method for consumers to watch video content but these devices have limited storage capacity. Samsung HDD is meeting this burgeoning demand by providing a device with the storage capacity consumers need to supplement their mobile device."

Back in March, Seagate India announced the second-generation Seagate Backup Plus Slim external storage drive and the "world's first portable 4TB storage device", the Backup Plus Fast.

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim comes with USB 3.0 interface and includes the backup software, Seagate Dashboard, which also shipped with the first-generation of Seagate Backup Plus drives. The Seagate Dashboard software provides one-click backup solution, but can also be set as a scheduled backup up as needed. Additionally, the Dashboard software can back up Facebook and Flickr albums and even all the photos you have been tagged in can be backed up from your social networks to the drive.

The free Seagate Mobile Backup app for iOS and Android mobile device lets you back up all pictures and videos from the device to the drive or the cloud. The drive also comes with pre-loaded NTFS driver for Mac, with which the drive can be used interchangeably between Windows and Mac computers without reformatting the drive or using an ancient file format like FAT.
