Redmi Y1 is Xiaomi’s new budget warrior as the Chinese brand aims to continue the strong growth it has experienced over the past year. The new model goes on sale in India on Wednesday, November 8 at 12pm IST via a flash sale in two variants, alongside its sibling Redmi Y1 Lite. The youth-focused selfie smartphone offers very competitive hardware for its segment, but with several popular models already in the running, will the going be tougher than what Xiaomi expects it to be? We take a look at the Redmi Y1 price in India, specifications and key features compared to the popular models in its price segment, such as Moto G5, Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt, and Lenovo K8 Plus, so you can decide which handset suits your requirements the best.

Redmi Y1 price in India is Rs. 8,999 for the variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB inbuilt storage, while the model with 4GB RAM and 64GB inbuilt storage costs Rs. 10,999. Moto G5 is also priced at Rs. 10,999 but for the variant with 3GB RAM and 16GB built-in storage. Lenovo K8 Plus 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage model is priced at Rs. 10,999 as well. Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt is the most expensive of the lot at Rs. 11,280, and comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB inbuilt storage.

Redmi Y1’s highlight is its 16-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture, 76.4-degree wide-angle lens, and LED selfie flash. The phone’s camera app comes with 36 smart beautify profiles, and can implement the beautification feature in video calls also. Other features such as face recognition and selfie countdown are baked in as well. With these features, Xiaomi is hoping to lure the selfie-obsessed youth of the country towards its new handset.

Xiaomi Redmi Y1 First Impressions

The dual-SIM (Nano + Nano) Redmi Y1 will soon run the MIUI 9 software version, based on Android Nougat. It sports a 5.5-inch JD (720x1280 pixels) display, and is powered by the octa-core Snapdragon 435 SoC. The rear camera has a 13-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture, phase-detection autofocus (PDAF), and real-time filters. Both variants of the handset come with support for storage expansion via microSD cards (up to 128GB). As for the battery capacity, Redmi Y1 packs a 3080mAh battery; there’s also a fingerprint sensor on the back.

Moto G5 was launched in India in April this year, and comes in only one configuration. Its highlights are the metallic body, the stock Android Nougat UI, and the water-repellent nano-coating. The dual-SIM (Nano + Nano) features a 5-inch display as well, but with full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) resolution; the octa-core Snapdragon 430 SoC keeps everything running. The handset has a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF and LED flash, while the front camera has 5-megapixel resolution and f/2.2 aperture. Its battery capacity is 2800mAh, and comes with support for fast charging. The fingerprint sensor is embedded in the physical Home button, and the storage can be expanded via microSD card (up to 256GB).

Redmi Y1 Lite vs Redmi Y1: What's the Difference?

The 3GB RAM variant of Lenovo K8 Plus – released in India in September – features dual rear cameras, 4000mAh battery, and stock Android Nougat operating system. The dual-SIM (Nano + Nano) handset comes with a 5.2-inch full-HD display and runs on the octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 chipset. The K8 Plus dual camera setup sports one 13-megapixel Purecel Plus sensor with and a second 5-megapixel depth sensor. Users will also be able to adjust the depth in real-time. On the front, there's an 8-megapixel camera with a 'Party Flash', f/2.0 aperture, and an 84-degree wide-angle lens. Buyers can expand storage using microSD cards (up to 128GB). On the back is the fingerprint sensor of the metal-bodied handset.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt’s highlights are the 5.5-inch Super AMOLED panel with HD resolution and the LED flash for selfies. The dual-SIM (dual Micro SIM) smartphone runs on Android Nougat-based custom skin and is powered by an octa-core Exynos 7870 chipset; the storage can be expanded up to 256GB on this handset. It has a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/1.9 aperture and LED flash, and a 5-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture in front. The Galaxy J7 Nxt has a 3000mAh battery. However, unlike the other phones in this list, the Samsung model does not have a fingerprint sensor.
