Lava to launch sub-Rs. 3,000 Firefox OS-based mobiles in India

Mozilla unveiled its Firefox OS-based Keon and Peak smartphones earlier this year. Later on ZTE, went on to showcase its Open phone running on this operating system at the Mobile World Congress 2013.

Huawei, LG and Sony too have indicated that they will be looking at making smartphones based on Firefox OS. The Indian smartphone maker, Lava too has acknowledged that the company is currently working on Firefox OS-based smartphones.

NDTV Gadgets spoke exclusively to Hari Om Rai, co-founder and Director, Lava International Ltd. and asked if the company had plans to launch smartphones based on any other platform. Rai confirmed that Lava was working on a Firefox OS-based smartphone that the company is looking at pricing below Rs. 3,000.

However Rai did not give out any details in regards to the time frame by when this device will be start retailing in the Indian market, nor did he share any other specifications..

Lava Mobiles is currently offering mobiles and tablets based on Android smartphone. The company has recently launched Iris 504Q smartphone in India. Priced at Rs. 13,499, this smartphone comes with gesture control feature.

While speaking to NDTV Gadgets, Rai also revealed that in the month of May, the company managed to sell over 9 lakh Lava devices. The company is targeting sales of 2 million units (20 lakh) per month by the end of this year.

The company is also betting big on the tablet space and believes that this segment has a lot of potential in the market especially in the education sector.
